Annual Report from the North Carolina Judicial College (2023-2024) – North Carolina Criminal Law

I am excited to share the latest annual report from the North Carolina Judicial College. Spoiler alert: In fiscal year 2023-2024, we offered more courses (51!) to more participants (more than 3,200!) than we have in my previous years as Judicial College Director. And our participants were pleased with the content, awarding our courses an average usefulness rating of 4.80.

Last year’s offerings included training for appellate judges on emerging legal issues, a course for superior court judges on capital cases, a course on involuntary commitment for magistrates, training for clerks who preside over incompetency and adult guardianship hearings, and a U.S. Supreme Court seminar for superior and district court judges. In addition, another cohort of judicial district executive leadership teams attended our leadership and case management series, Getting Justice Done.

In addition to showcasing officials’ reviews of these and other educational programs, the report features new publications from our faculty, including a new edition of Arrest Warrant and Indictment Forms, a digital edition of Arrest, Search, and Investigation in North Carolina, and North Carolina Magistrates’ Guide to Pretrial Release.

Every year, we strive to provide high-quality instruction and reference materials that equip judicial branch officials with the skills and knowledge they need to carry out their important responsibilities. We hope that the recapitulation of our efforts over the past year demonstrates that we have met the mark.

We remain grateful to the Administrative Office of the Courts for our longstanding partnership, which is essential to our operations.
