I remember when the email went live across the firms. There were associates on one floor panicking and crying. They already feel so stretched in terms of the work and effort that they just couldn’t envisage how they would be able to justify another hike.

— A a partner at an elite U.K.-based firm, in comments given to Law.com International on how associates at his firm reacted to the news that pay for newly qualified lawyers would be increasing. There is currently a salary war going on among London-based Biglaw firms, with salaries for newly qualified lawyers increasing to as much as £183,000 (that’s $234,733 in today’s exchange rate).
