Attorney Reels In Bassmaster Title

Largemouth Bass in waterCongratulations go out to Virginia attorney Ed Loughran III. The University of Richmond School of Law alum works at Deskevich, Gavin & Harris but it’s his non-legal resume we’re celebrating right now. Loughran won the title at the Bassmaster Elite at Lake Champlain earlier this week.  Loughran’s Elite Series title netted him a $100,000 check and a blue trophy (which is apparently a very big deal in the fishing world).

And, as described by analyst Pete Robbins, it was quite the nail biter:

Ed Loughran, sidelined just a few weeks ago by kidney stones, saw his Day Three lead decreased from 2 pounds, 2 ounces, to a single ounce. Remaining on the right side of the line was all that mattered, though. As we’ve learned again and again and again, even when big fish are the norm, single ounces can be crucial.

It’s been 13 years since an Elite title was decided by a single ounce.

The victory was a thrilling surprise for Loughran:

“I had zero thought that I had won. I was hoping to just stay in the Top 5,” Loughran said. “It’s unbelievable. I’ve never won a big tournament. I’ve had Top 5s in big tournaments … but I’m always a little short. I didn’t have any realistic expectation of winning one, but after yesterday I thought I might have a chance.

The title is Loughran’s first — and very meaningful to the attorney, as he said, “The money will come and go, but that trophy will not go anywhere.”

Congratulations!
