Ex-IT Employee Allegedly Stole $70K From Law School To Fund His Band

An ex-IT employee was indicted in May on three counts of larceny for stealing nearly $70,000 from the law school where he worked, and earlier this week, he was arraigned for his five-figure financial heist.

Gareth Flanagan, 52, formerly of New England Law|Boston, stands accused of stealing tens of thousands of dollars from the school’s Amazon account. He allegedly did this between 2020 and 2022, taking a total of about $68,000. According to authorities, Flanagan used the account to purchase music equipment for his band, “Sloth Machine.” He admitted to the unauthorized purchases after being confronted by an external auditor for the school, claiming he was “testing” the equipment.

Law.com has additional details on how the school reacted to the charges:

Flanagan was terminated from New England Law on Oct. 11, 2022, a New England Law spokesperson told Law.com in an emailed statement.

“New England Law is grateful to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office and the Boston Police Department for their diligent efforts in this matter. The law school will continue to cooperate with law enforcement moving forward,” the statement reads.

After paying $1,000 bail, Flanagan was released and ordered to stay away from the school. A jury trial is set for March.
